About
I am a physicist, data scientist and software developer. My research asks how the Sun disturbs the ionosphere, and how those disturbances degrade the GNSS signals that aviation, surveying, agriculture and power grids depend on.
My work combines observation, machine learning and engineering: from HF radar on the Antarctic ice at SANAE IV, to neutron monitor and satellite records, to forecasting models for ionospheric scintillation over equatorial Africa. Alongside research, I design and deploy data systems for universities, and I direct a national Centre of Excellence on Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Cyber Sciences.
Research interests and expertise
GNSS, space weather and machine learning
Ionospheric scintillation and GNSS integrity, solar energetic particles and cosmic ray ground level enhancements, mesosphere and thermosphere dynamics, and machine learning forecasts for noisy geophysical time series.
Software development and Linux
Python, Django, React and SQL applications deployed on Linux servers and cloud platforms, with automated pipelines, scheduled jobs, payment integration and document generation.
Data modelling and finance
Relational data models, payment reconciliation and fee analytics for universities, budgeting for funded programmes, and quantitative modelling of financial time series with tested algorithmic strategies.
Data storytelling and communication
Dashboards that turn records into decisions, strategy papers for national agencies, journal editing and production, and teaching physics to large undergraduate classes.
